The bank was founded in 1904 as Bank of Italy by Amadeo Giannini in San Francisco, California.

Giannini's goal was to provide banking services to the working class population of the city who were largely ignored by the established banks at the time.

The bank grew rapidly and by the 1920s had branches throughout California.

In 1928, the bank merged with Bank of America, Los Angeles, and adopted the name Bank of America.
